If you’re looking for a quick, cute crochet project that works up fast and adds a little oomph to just about anything, this crochet flower puff is it. I love these because they’re small, versatile, and perfect for using up scrap yarn, creating beautiful piece of fabric, or creating cute keychains! You can add them to granny squares, hats, bags, garlands, or even turn them into jewelry accents.
The great thing about this fun little project is that it is beginner-friendly and only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it.
What You’ll Need
Yarn: Any weight will work, but worsted weight (size 4) is a great place to start
Hook: Match your yarn (I use a 4.5 - 5 mm / H-8 hook for worsted weight)
Scissors
Yarn needle (optional, for weaving in ends)
Stitches Used
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
Crochet Flower Puff Pattern
This flower is worked in the round and creates a soft, slightly raised 3D look.
Round 1: Create the Center
Make a magic ring(Alternatively: chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.)
Chain 1.
Work 12 single crochet stitches into the ring.
Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join.
Do not turn your work.
Round 2: Make the Petals
Each petal is worked into two stitch from Round 1.
Slip stitch into the next stitch.
In the same stitch:
Chain 2
Work 3 double crochet in 1st and 2nd stitch
There should be 13 loops on your crochet hook
Yarn over and pull through all the hoops, expect the last one
Chain 2
Slip stitch in the next stitch
Repeat this sequence in each stitch around.
You’ll end up with 6 puffy petals.
Slip stitch to finish the round.
Finishing Touches
Fasten off your yarn.
Pull the magic ring tight.
Weave in any loose ends.
Gently fluff and shape the petals with your fingers to bring out the puff.
And just like that—you’ve got a crochet flower puff 🌼
Two-Color Flower
Use one color for the center.
Join a new color before starting Round 2 for contrasting petals.
Smaller Flower
Start with 12 single crochets in Round 1 instead of 8 for fewer petals.
How to Use Crochet Flower Puffs
These little flowers are incredibly versatile. Try using them:
As appliqués on bags, hats, or cardigans
In the center of granny squares
Strung together for garlands
Sewn onto headbands or clips
As inspiration for mixed-media or jewelry designs
Fabric piece or blanket
If you make this flower puff, I’d love to see how you use it! Whether it’s colorful, neutral, bold, or soft—each one comes out a little different, and that’s part of the beauty!
